New Larkfall release - The Pneumatic Consort & Johann Wlight split cdr, see the recordings page for samples. The Pneumatic Consort presents a suite of seven intuitively played pieces for recorder, flute and flageolets inspired by the surreal formula to call the fairy Sibylia reproduced in Reginald Scott's Discoverie of Witchcraft. Suffolk's Johann Wlight (previous releases on Nid Nod, Evelyn, Sijis, Sunny Days Out, etc.) delivers a long melancholic piece composed of tape manipulated drones, environmental recordings and modified acoustic sounds - atmospheric and profound. Low-key music for a summers twilight.

I had the great pleasure of joining Number None onstage last night for the Leeds leg of their tour with Jazzfinger. Things seemed to go surprisingly well, especially considering that we only met an hour or so before playing... Great performances by Ben & Has, Julian Bradley & the Birds of Delay too! You can keep up with their tour blog here.

Back to business as usual!

The Pyrognomic Glass - two pieces of music for the liminal hours. Abital for the evening twilight, Rorasa for the morning. To score a copy see the Memoirs of an Aesthete message below, or check out Volcanic Tongue or Boa Melody Bar.

For Dutch readers, I had a nice time rambling on about various things to Bart de Paepe over at Storing Zine. Thanks Bart!

I'll be away for a few weeks - so if you want to order anything, take a look at Boa Melody Bar first, or be prepared to wait! :o) Also, straight from the desk of Memoirs of an Aesthete:

MEMOIRS OF AN AESTHETE summer muckbasket '05
We're back up and running after a horrible couple of months (family catastrophes, cashflow hassle, technical hitchery et al), here's the new hot selection. All of these are diamonds, no lie. Anyway.

THE DIRECTING HAND - LOVE WILL WASTE MY BODY (CDR)
The first "solo" CD by Mr.Alex Neilson of Glasgow, who has been getting his name in the papers a bit for his collaboration work with RICHARD YOUNGS, ALASTAIR ROBERTS, JANDEK, VIBRACATHEDRAL, ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS, MIRROR and a whole floorshow of others, plus his superb band SCATTER. The first DIRECTING HAND shows him to be no mere sideman (scoff that idea out of the window NOW), with four long sound assemblages which blend free jazz, psych noise and the alluring drone of Scottish traditional music. Features Ben Reynolds, Phil Todd (ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS), Chris Hladowski (SCATTER), Luke Younger (BIRDS OF DELAY) and others whose names are illegible (you'll see). Very "there". Don't miss this one. Five English pounds

XENIS EMPUTAE TRAVELLING BAND - THE PYROGNOMIC GLASS (CDR)
There is another longhaired droning Yorkshire citizen named Phil. The Memoirs "search and co-opt" policy ensures that we have to take action. So: this. Mr. Phil Legard has the debonair aura of Marc Bolan-meets-Tony Visconti circa early '68, and his music is similarly patterned after the more disorientating artifacts from the original Age Of Aquarius. Desolate folk plunkings, Krishna-on-a-vacation flute and a real melancholic lost-in-the-forest ayr of mysterie makes this a July winner. One for retiring to your alchemists laboratory-in-the-woods with a few test-tubes full of absinthe to. Do something real decadent like that, anyway. Five English pounds.

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS - WHO'S BEEN ROCKING MY DREAM-BOAT? (CDR)
For the special surprise and delight of those poor neglected souls who think Ashtray was "better in ye olde days" (yeah, these people do seem to exist.give them a ha'penny) we present a digital relaunch ing of this ramshackle vessel from '96. Two pieces for electronics from a cassette release on Italy's Less Than Zero label. Also includes a violin and synth track revived from a split cassette (with Japan's SUKORA) which Betley pooped out the same distant year. So you get 76 minutes worth, kids. Ashtray at its most minimal, akin to the sound you hear just before you fall asleep face down under a canal bridge (don't try this at home - the CDR is safer). And you can wake up to a whole sugarfresh morning with the new 3inch CDR
listed below. Five English pounds also.

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS - AURORA GREASE SWEETROCKET (3" CDR)
Latest basement clacker from The Nav. Blown tape levels, idiot rock n roll (with moron mantra drumming) and the shimmering of a sexy mile-long windchime in space. It's a bit like smearing sugar all round the inside of your mouth and going into the park to hand out fireworks. And its not even Xmas yet! Holy fuck. Four English pounds.

BEN REYNOLDS - MORE TONGUE MEDITATIONS (3" CDR)
Like "Rocket Fuel" coffee (anyone remember that stuff?), this is exactly what it says on the packet. A sequel to the prolific Mr R's previous Memoirs volume "Great Tongue Meditations". Dream tones, psychedelic wavering and the haunting voices of the Stoke On Trent power grid will keep you smiling through this half of the cake. Will he make us a Tongue Trilogy? Time will tell. This will sure be sufficient for now. Four English pounds.

Still available:

001: BEN REYNOLDS & ANDY JARVIS (CDR) 5.00 gbp
twin acoustic guitar open tuning meltdown from Andy (SCULPTRESS, ANNA
PLANET, A WARM PALINDROME) and Ben (THE WOW) like basho playing free jazz in the mirror.

003: VINCE EARL & THE VALIANTS songs the neighbours tortoise (3" CDR) 4.00 gbp
Stewart Treize nee Walden (A BAND etc) and Phil Todd tackle the works of
Fleetwood Mac and make lovin' fun enough to send Jeremy Spencer scuttling
back to the Children Of God.

009 : ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS - SOME CAT LOST IN HIS OWN PICTURE 7"
six interweaving tracks recorded leeds easter 2004. dictophone cut-up while
catsitting, tabla volley, junkyard folk, bare wall howl and fast musical
chairs with the legs falling off. ideal for any witches jukebox, provided it
runs at 33. ten years of ashtray navigating spawns a lost kitty instead of a
monster. you may have been king of the jungle back in africa, but in this
circus you're just another bozo. edition of 170 copies. four english pounds
and fifty english pence plus postage.

012: BEN REYNOLDS - GREAT TONGUE MEDITATIONS (3 inch CDR) 4 english pounds
New 19 minute scorcher from this hotly-tipped young guitarslinger from York,
a recent Ashtray collaborator with releases on First Person and Foxy
Digitalis. Best known for his open-tuned acoustic cobweb weaving, but here
Mr. Reynolds concentrates mainly on an inspired ringing out of the imaginary
electric overhead cables which connect the boroughs of Stoke-On-Trent and
Yorkshire. Edition of 100.

The other Memoirs will be back in stock eventually, when we've coped with
this lot and replenished some supplies

Small update - XETB will be doing some kind of ramshackle folk ritual on June 4th at Thornborough Free Festival in Masham, at the Timewatch Cafe (TBC).

Also, a new release coming on Larkfall next month - The Pneumatic Consort & Johann Wlight split cdr - more on that presently!

Springtime surprise - A Selenographic Lens is now up as a free download on the recordings page. It was originally released as a 3" cdr in an edition of 31 and sold out in November 2004. Available while bandwidth allows! Thaumaturgy wrote: "A Selenographic Lens, a 3" cd-r released last year on Legard's own Larkfall imprint, comprises 2 tracks of dark whimsy. On the first and most compelling of the tracks, "Bogle Burn", a lone banjo plucks out a simple melody, while a pocket symphony of recorders, singing bowls and other instruments gradually contribute their voices to a swelling drone in the background. "Alchemy at Kutna Hora" is a far more abstract and unsettling affair, a hollow mixture of groaning reeds (harmonium? accordian?), rattling percussion, struck and bowed violin, and the muffled whine of a banshee trapped in a bell jar. Though unlike each other in emotional tenor, both tracks serve as fine examples of the more improvisational side of Legard's ouvre."

Minor update - Sonic Temple Assassin's Impact! cdr is on the distro page. I've almost finished mixing the Lychgate Seers album, so keep yer eyes open... also, The Pyrognomic Glass by XETB is almost finished - a sort of sequel to A Selenographic Lens...

25/02/05

The Rebis weblog has a piece about XETB, which includes a full download of the track Bogle Burn, which makes up half of the now out-of-print cdr A Selenographic Lens. Get it while it's hot!

Plenty of news! An exclusive XETB track (Lichen Virgin) appears on the new compilation by Mandolin Records. It's a record of a visit to midsummer evening's visit to Wharram Percy. I also contributed some words/vocals to Sonic Temple Assassins' forthcoming 3" Impact! It's a great slice of Finnish electro-primitive rock and roll with shades of Suicide, The Cramps and Brainticket!

I now have copies of Toadsman's Bell on the distro page, which can also be purchased at Eclipse Records and Boa Melody Bar, who should also shortly have all the current Larkfall releases in stock. Also, Naninani in France have all Larkfall releases including the last few copies of A Selenographic Lens.

Reviews of the North Sea and Xenis Emputae Travelling Band split can be read at The Psychedelic Albums website and Mats Gustafson's Broken Face blog.

On a final bummer note, like every other obscure band and bedroom label of limited appeal, XETB is being ripped off by Audio1.org who are (seemingly) selling mp3s of Lords of the Green Grass. I personally love people to trade my music over file sharing networks, but I'm a bit miffed to see that these guys are selling it. What's more ridiculous is that for about a dollar more than the price of their downloads you can buy the real cd with full colour cover art, etc. from QueasyListening...

21/01/05

Another new XETB release! The Toadsman's Bell is now availble on cd from Digitalis Industries. Five tracks - songs to Eve, marching music for the battle of the trees, music for the shining shepherd, a document of the Samhain working and the wild (morris) dance. I'll hopefully be distributing a few via this site sometime soon.

First update of the new year, so I'll start with the bad news! I'm afraid I've had to up prices by £1 GBP, it was either that or stop!

The better news is that I'm pleased to announce a new cdr, being a split between Tulsa's The North Sea and Yorkshire's own Xenis Emputae Travelling Band. The North Sea provide naturally unfolding dream-dronescapes of strings scraping bowed, drones muffled, ghostly piano and a great outdoor opus of lazily strummed guitar, bells and birds. The North Sea is one Brad Rose, also of The Cone Bearers, Juniper Meadows, The Golden Oaks (with Hush Arbor's Keith Wood), editor of Foxy Digitalis zine and all-round renaissance man.
The Xenis Emputae Travelling Band tracks provide further chronicles of my current obsessions and journeys - the pastoral-gothic of Clark Ashton Smith's poetry, the local omphalos of "Orm's Cliff", faery hills and the prophecies of the local saints of the Yorkshire Wolds. Visit the recordings page for tracklisting and mp3 samples.
